Thirty-six high school students from Long Island school districts won the first round of the prestigious Regeneron Science Talent Search - a scholarship competition that was once funded by the Intel Corporation and before that by the Westinghouse Corporation. The winners will now go on to a final round of the competition, and the finalists will receive a scholarship prize of $25,000.
The north shore students honored are: Nicole Khaimov of Glen Cove High School Keaton Danseglio and Kyra McCreery of North Shore High School; William Borges of Roslyn High School; Sejal Gupta of Hicksville High School. Feiyang Dai, Emily Gan and Jennijer Lin of Jericho High School; Hailey Edelman and Michelle Li of Syosset High School; Jordan Klein and Miriam Quraishi of Ward Melville High School; and
Priya Chainani and Kreena Totala of Schreiber Port Washington High School Hicksville student Sejal Gupta's submitted science project is called “The Development of a Machine Learning Algorithm to Trace the Path of Joints for Gait Rehabilitation.”
“My research aims to help clinicians provide proper treatment to individuals suffering from neuromuscular diseases like Parkinson’s Disease. With my prediction model based on artificial intelligence, clinicians can see how a specific person should ideally walk. I hope that one day my research can help people around the world walk comfortably and happily,” stated Gupta. “Being a Regeneron Scholar is a dream come true, but this is just the first step on a long journey ahead. I hope to use my research experience as a foundation for my future endeavors. One day, I hope to start a BioTech company that will create personalized devices to help individuals with neuromuscular diseases return to a normal life.” The winners will now go on to a final round of the competition, and the finalists will receive a scholarship prize of $25,000.
