A huge clean-up effort removed over 1,000 illegally-dumped tires, which were dumped in the woods off Route 106 in East Norwich.
The clean-up was organized when the Town of Oyster Bay, the Friends of the Bay and local volunteers sprang into action.
Someone has been using the woods – adjacent to the Muttontown Preserve - as an illegal dumping ground.
Police and Town environmental officers believe the dumping has been going on for a year and a half. Over 1000 tires and other debris and garbage were dumped there.
The site is owned by the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District and borders the Muttontown Preserve just south of Locust Ave. The property was donated to the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District in the 1950’s.
Once word spread about the illegal dumping, local residents organized the Saturday March 22nd cleanup. Many community groups, the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District, and local police and businesses joined the residents.
Volunteers removed hundreds tires and placed them on the side of the road to be hauled away. Local businesses donated equipment, including dumpsters and an excavator.
The Town of Oyster Bay hauled away 1,000 used tires.
“The Town is proud to partner with local organizations to remove abandoned tires and restore our environment,” stated Oyster Bay Supervisor Joe Saladino. “By working together, we are not only cleaning up our community, but also protecting our natural resources for future generations.”
Currently no suspects have been identified, but Nassau County Police are investing. They ask you contact them with any information on the dumping.
The school district and police are now installing surveillance cameras to monitor the area.
