Glen Head 2nd Graders Celebrate "Fairy Tale Ball"

By Thomas Nothel

Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel & Gretel, and all the famous classic fairy tale stories came to life at the Glen Head School this Spring.

The second grade class at the North Shore School District's Glen Head School celebrated a "Fairy Tale Ball," as a way for them to learn about classic fairy tales - and have fun.

This enchanting inter-disciplinary event capped over a month of literary studies in folk and fairy tales.  It was  part of the school's English curriculum, and it also combined many lessons in art and music.

As part of their English curriculum, the second graders focused on story elements in famous fairy tales  including: settings, famous fairy tale lines, and characterization.

Prior to the celebration, they were taught all about poems, character traits, repeating words and happy endings.

In April, parents, families, and friends were invited to the magical Fairy Tale Ball where their children dressed up as their favorite characters in classic fairy tale literature.  The characters included Cinderella, Goldilocks, the Three Bears, the Three Little Pigs, and Jack and the Beanstalk.

During the celebration, the students read their own creative stories - adapted from the fairy tales - to their families, showed them their fairy tale character posters, and sang fun songs.

In art class, students created artwork relating to the folk and fairy tale stories which were displayed outside their classrooms for everyone to see!

Bravo to all of the second grade teachers who helped their students not only learn the wonders of fairy tales, but engaged all of the parents and family members in attendance to a captivating "Fairy Tale Ball" celebration.
