Northwell Opens New Senior Care Center in Oyster Bay

By Chris O’Neill

Northwell Health has converted a former HSBC bank location into a 2 million dollar outpatient facility meant to treat patients with multiple medical issues – both young and old.

The Age-Friendly Center of Excellence, which opened on December 9, and is located at 275 South St., is an extension of Glen Cove Hospital.

It's almost $2 million cost was funded by a federal grant secured by Congressman Tom Suozzi.

The center makes access and use easy by having low and adjustable exam chairs, wheelchair-friendly rooms, and meeting areas where caregivers can met with their patients.

The center covers 3,400 square feet, has six exam rooms, and is staffed by internal medicine doctors, geriatricians, nurses, social workers, and clinical pharmacists.

Kerri Scanlon, the hospital’s executive director, believes that the center can save families money by preventing unnecessary emergency department visits.

The outpatient facility is an extension of Glen Cove Hospital, which has been recognized as a federal Geriatric Center of Excellence, said Kerri Scanlon, the hospital’s executive director.

She added that while much has been done recently in the realm of emergency care for the elderly, this center will supplement that with outpatient care, “and that’s where most of care is provided.”
