Phillips Blasts Hochul-Controlled Med Center for Burying Finances

The Governor Kathy Hochul (D-Buffalo)-controlled Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) has blown past its filing deadlines, and appears to be withholding financial reports that would be embarrassing to Governor Hochul.

Nassau County Comptroller Elaine Phillips (R-Flower Hill) blasted Hochul and her team for burying the financial reports, and putting Nassau County's finances in jeopardy, because the NUMC finances are a significant part of Nassau County's finances.

The County has been forced to request extensions on the missed deadlines, but failure to file the complete financial reports with the Federal Audit Clearinghouse by September 30th would result in the County losing its “low risk” status with the federal government, making the County “high risk.”

"I have to stress the importance of the annual financial reports and to urge them [Hochul's team] to deliver their audited financial statements to us," stated Comptroller Phillips.

In May, 2025, Hochul took-over the Medical Center, ousting its Board and placing her own loyal political appointees in charge. NUMC's finances are now in crisis.

The NUMC crisis is now putting the entire Nassau County government at risk for potential loss or delay of grant funding, which accounts for $369 million of the County’s annual budget.
