Smyth Goes Nasty: “Liars, Criminals, Fakes, Villains, Scoundrels, Imbeciles, Frauds”

In an unhinged eight-minute video posted to social media, Huntington Supervisor Ed Smyth launched into a rambling personal tirade against his imagined “enemies” and boasted wildly taking credit for other people's accomplishments.

Smyth is increasingly desperate as polling shows that Councilwoman Brooke Lupinacci (R) is on track to defeat him in the June 24th Republican primary election for Huntington Supervisor.

Lupinacci is running “to Save Huntington - to stop Ed Smyth’s scheme to build thousands of high-density urban apartments in Huntington, and stop the municipal corruption that accompanies that scheme,” stated Lupinacci, who is running with Republican Town Council candidates Eugene Cook and John Posillico.

Smyth planned the high density apartments scheme with corrupt developer Greg DeRosa, who has been arrested and charged by the Suffolk DA for criminal fraud.  He is also charged in Court with a “$50 million Ponzi land scheme” and stealing tens of millions from Huntington residents.

The FBI has been investigating Smyth for months, and according to law enforcement sources, has referred indictments to the US Department of Justice against DeRosa and Smyth officials.

Last year, Smyth gave DeRosa a $1.4 million “gift” by re-zoning DeRosa’s condo development on Spring Road in Huntington, waiving the "affordability" requirement.  A $300,000 affordable Condo suddenly became a $1.7 million full price condo.  And Huntington lost one more affordable owner occupied home.

In the posted Facebook video, Smyth labels various opponents - and local residents who oppose municipal corruption and his high-density apartment schemes - as “Fakes” "Liars” “Villains” “Criminals” “Scoundrels” "Imbeciles" and “Frauds.”

He also brags and claims other people's accomplishments: Smyth falsely claims that he “saved” the Seminary of the Immaculate Conception in Lloyd Harbor.

But the truth is that Smyth was so destructive during multi party negotiations that the New York State Parks Department and the Village of Lloyd Harbor cut-out the Town and reached a direct settlement with the Catholic Church to save the property as parkland for the community.

“Everyone knows that Lloyd Harbor Mayor Jean Thatcher was the person who fought for and saved the grounds of the Seminary as parkland," stated former Huntington Town Attorney Deborah Misir.

A false smear by Smyth is his attack on Conservative Dom Spada.

In a social media posting, Smyth called Spada a “convicted criminal” - which is not true.

Spada, the former Huntington Deputy Maritime Director and Deputy Mayor of Huntington Bay, is running a primary in the Conservative Party against Smyth.

Spada was the Fire Chief of the Halesite Fire Department.

“I have never been convicted of any crime - never,” stated Spada. “And it’s disgusting of Ed Smyth to make such a false and defamatory statement.”

Spada once ran as the Republican and Conservative nominee for Suffolk Legislature. The Democratic DA targeted him and filed charges of “resume exaggeration” against Spada, for which the DA was widely criticized for political “lawfare” and corruption. Later, all criminal charges were dismissed against Spada.

“I am running because as a conservative I cannot support Smyth dealing with criminal developers to jam thousands of high density apartments into Huntington,” added Spada.

Another nasty smear by Smyth was against Lupinacci's former Chief of Staff JoAnn Mendes - whom Smyth fired in February as retaliation for Lupinacci having referred Huntington criminal corruption to the FBI.  Smyth falsely claimed that Mendes left because of Lupinacci's "toxic office."

"Never had I turned an offer down to continue my career with the town, contrary to what had been implied in this video; as I had loved serving the constituents of Huntington, the town I was raised in and the community my father served as civic leader for decades," stated Mendes.

"Anything said contrary to that, is the furthest from the truth. Ask the Supervisor if this was retaliation," she added.

"If people want to stop Ed Smyth's re-zone of high-density apartments into Huntington, we all need to vote for Brooke Lupinacci and her 'A team' of Eugene Cook and John Posillico," added longtime Republican activist Bob Sarducci. "This may be our last chance to Save Huntington."
