Two people were nearly killed in a late-night Glen Cove house fire in a group home on Raymond Street, that investigators have determined was arson.

The alleged arsonist, Alex Kirton, age 47, of Raymond Street in Glen Cove was arrested following an investigation by Nassau Homicide Detectives, Arson Squad Detectives, and the Glen Cove Police.

Kirton is charged with first-degree arson and two counts of first-degree attempted murder.

The fire injured two residents, one critically, according to Glen Cove police.

Critically injured was one 41-year-old man, who was airlifted to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with second- and third-degree burns. Another resident, a 68-year-old man, was transported by Ambulance to Glen Cove Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.

According to Nassau County Assistant Chief Fire Marshal Michael Uttaro, the first victim was pulled from the home by Glen Cove firefighters, and the second victim was taken out by the Glen Cove police.

Uttaro added that two Glen Cove firefighters suffered minor injuries, and were treated at the scene.
